How To Clean A Clear Phone Case

Phone cases: we know them, we love them, we use them. Phone cases are basically accessories these days, you can get them with all kinds of graphics, keychains, sparkles, and I don’t know what else. But for those of us who want a no-frills phone case, a clear case seems like the perfect option. 

However, a lot of people choose not to use a clear phone case simply because they show dirt SO EASILY. But never fear. If you want a clear phone case but are afraid of the cleaning upkeep, I’m going to give you an easy guide to cleaning your phone case. 

We’re going through general cleaning info for clear phone cases as well as how to clean a clear phone case that turned yellow. Because yes, that happens, and it’s gross! So let’s get your phone case clean enough to eat on because you’re basically putting your mouth to it all the time anyway. 

How Often Should You Clean Your Phone Case?

If you’ve never cleaned your phone case before, drop your phone right now! Unless you’re reading this article on your phone, then wait. But seriously, your phone picks up so many germs. Think about it; we’re always touching, holding, and using our phones. After the bathroom (or in the bathroom), walking in and out of the gas station, picking up the kids from school. 

No matter how often you sanitize your hands, you’re going to touch your phone before you sanitize, at least sometimes. That means all those germs transfer onto your phone and then get held up and pressed against your face. Yuck! And if you let your kids use your phone, forget about it! It’s time for a clean. 

So how often should you clean your phone case? Well, this depends. If you use your phone while you eat, you’ll want to clean it more often than if you don’t. If you work from home, you probably need to clean your phone case less than if you work in an office. 

That being said, in the past few years, we’ve all been taught an important lesson in hygiene. And clear phone cases show dirt so easily they need to be cleaned more frequently than other cases purely for aesthetic reasons. So my go-to number is once a week, or twice if you’re ambitious. 

How To Clean A Clear Phone Case

OK, your phone case is dirty. What do you do next? Well, first, you’re going to take your phone out of your case. 

Fill a bowl with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. Remember, you can always add more dish soap, but no one wants a sticky, sudsy phone. Use a cleaning toothbrush to scrub your phone case with your cleaning solution. Get right into corners and port openings for a thorough clean. 

Rinse your phone case under the tap. Do this until you are absolutely sure there is no soap residue left, even in the corners. Dry your phone case with a towel, then let air dry. Don’t skip either drying step because the worst thing to do would be to put your expensive phone back in a phone case with damp spots. 

If you wash your phone case weekly, you should be able to prevent stains and yellowing. However, if your clear phone case is already turning yellow, I’ve got a solution for you. 

How To Clean A Clear Phone Case That Turned Yellow

There are a few solutions to clean a yellowing phone case. In mild cases, washing with soap and water may get most of the yellowing off. But you often need to bring in the big guns. What are the big guns, you may be wondering? Well, it’s just one big gun, and it’s called baking soda. 

Baking soda isn’t just a baking ingredient; it’s also an amazing cleaning product. To use baking soda as a phone case cleaner, take your phone out of its case. Then, place your case on a towel to avoid making a mess. Sprinkle baking soda generously over the entire case. You can do this to both sides, but try to identify which side is the source of the stain. 

Wet your cleaning toothbrush and use it to scrub the baking soda all over the case. Scrub in a circular motion, being sure you are getting into corners, edges, and port openings. If your toothbrush dries out, dampen it again and continue. 

Once you’ve scrubbed your entire case thoroughly, wash it under running water. You can use your cleaning toothbrush again to make sure the baking soda is entirely gone. Then dry with a towel and let air dry. Once again, never put your phone into a damp case.

How To Disinfect Your Phone Case

Don’t forget, cleaning and disinfecting do not mean the same thing. Confused? Read my article All About All-Purpose Cleaners and Disinfectants. To disinfect your phone case, first remove your phone. 

Take a clean microfiber cloth and dampen it with rubbing alcohol. Wipe your phone case down thoroughly to disinfect. But, heed this warning. Rubbing alcohol can actually discolor some clear cases, depending on the material. If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times; check your manufacturer guidelines and do a small test spot before you rub a new substance all over your phone case.
