3 DIY Cleaners That Will Make Your Home Smell Great!

Welcome back to Clean My Space! Today we are going to look at some great DIY solutions to add to your cleaning routine. Now, some over-the-counter products are sometimes necessary, but you’ll find that many of them can be replaced with DIY alternatives, saving you a lot of money in the process and making your home smell fantastic!

Before I got into the cleaning game in 2006, I really did not know much about DIY cleaners because, simply, I didn’t know any better. Since then, I have used countless recipes that have saved me so much time, money, and effort! For this article, I have gone into our eBook called 50 DIY Cleaners and pulled out 3 essential recipes that are easy to make and that will leave your home smelling wonderful and fresh.

Everyday Countertop Cleaner

The first DIY product we are going to make is the Everyday Countertop Cleaner! This is such a great DIY product because you don’t need much to clean your countertops. Frankly, all you need is soap and water. It’s that easy! I’ve never understood why someone would go out and spend money on a fancy countertop cleaner or even on an everyday multi-surface spray when you can quite literally make your own for pennies.

Add 2 cups of water, 1 teaspoon of dish soap, and 10 drops of your favorite essential oils to a clean spray bottle. A scent combo I love for kitchen counters is any combination of citrus aromas. I’ve chosen grapefruit and lime but you can do lemon-lime, tangerine, orange, or bergamot! There are so many members of the citrus family that you can mix together to make great scents for all your cleaning needs. Either way, citrus is bright and uplifting, making it the perfect choice for kitchens and bathrooms!

To use the Everyday Countertop Cleaner give it a little shake, spray the area you want to clean liberally, and let the product sit for a minute or two so that the soapy water can do its work, then, with a microfiber cloth, use the simple S pattern to wipe the surface clean. Different materials require different things but this stuff is safe for pretty much every countertop I’ve ever encountered and saves you a ton of money in the end! General Floor Cleaner

The largest surfaces in your home tend to be the floors. That’s why, when you make your own floor cleaner, you can really impact the way your home smells! Now, it is very important to know the type of floor you have and how to treat them, as some floors can be more or less delicate. But, for a general floor cleaner recipe just mix 1 1/2 cups of warm water with a 1/4 cup of vinegar, 1/8 of a cup of rubbing alcohol, 2 drops of dish soap, and 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oils.

Personally, nothing makes me happier than being at the spa, which is why I always chose a combination of lavender and eucalyptus oils, but whatever you choose, make sure it’s a bright and pleasant scent to give your space that fresh feeling every time you clean your floors. Now, you can either make this up in a bucket and use it with a string or microfiber twist mop, or you can use it in a spray bottle, wiping surfaces down with a flathead microfiber mop.

Glass and Mirror Cleaning

Other high-impact surfaces in your house are your glass surfaces and mirrors. Whether you’re in a small space like a bathroom or a large space like a living room that has a lot of windows and perhaps some decorative mirror, you’re probably going through quite a bit of glass cleaner. Personally, I think store-bought glass cleaner smells terrible and leaves awful streaks, so instead, try my homemade DIY recipe made up of two very readily available products.

Mix up 1 cup of water, 1 cup of white vinegar, and 10 drops of your favorite into a spray bottle, and voila! You have a cheap and effective glass and mirror cleaner! Now, some people freak out when they hear about adding oil to water, and then cleaning glass surfaces, but I promise you, the droplets in the essential oil are so tiny that you’re not going to get any oil streaks, only a beautiful fresh scent. My primo choice for this application is peppermint. It’s always just been so refreshing, minty, and uplifting. And remember, always use a flat-weave microfiber cloth, to ensure that you don’t leave any streaks or marks!
