This is a standard (read: base model) handheld vacuum that is designed to compete with a base model handheld vacuum.
The days of dust busting are over.
The Dyson DC30 is perfect for cleaning up between cleanings, collecting crumbs and cleaning up after craft and small DIY projects around the house. Some tradespeople even take it along on the job site to spot clean small messes from dried paint splatters, wood shavings and drywall dust. It’s great to take it into the car for quick cleans or other spaces that are difficult to access with a traditional corded vacuum. Microchip technology is what allows for a very powerful and cordless Root Cyclone suction. The machine uses a Lithium ion 14.8V battery and takes about 3 hours to charge.
This offers one mode and 40 AW suction power. It will last you between 6-8 minutes and you won’t lose suction even up to the last minute it’s turned on. The DC30 is easy to empty which makes for a sanitary and quick maintenance protocol. As with the DC34, if you don’t like using the hose and attachments on a traditional vacuum (or dragging out the vacuum for a seemingly small task), this is a good choice for you.

Cool features
It also has a digital motor, which is touted to be smaller, lighter and more powerful than conventional motors. According to the website, ‘Controlled by microchip it spins at 98,000 rpm – five-times faster than a Formula 1 car engine. Because of its speed, the digital motor is half the size and half the weight of conventional motors. With no brushes or fixed magnets, it doesn’t emit carbon either’. That’s amazing. It also features the Root Cyclone technology that Dyson is famous for, making pet hair no challenge for this little guy.
The good
You are getting the baseline Dyson technology with this unit, which is what they are famous for. It’s handy, that’s for sure. It works well; it has excellent suction and it beats dragging out the vacuum (if you find that cumbersome). It’s lighter than the DC34 and makes quick clean ups easy.
The not so good
It does not come with the multitude of attachments that the DC34 does, and although it sounds strange, that’s a bit of an issue for me. If the unit is being used in so many small spaces, tight corners and for very specific jobs, I would like to see more tools made available to me. As with the DC34, the battery does not last a long time either, however no handheld vacuum really lasts for long periods (without losing suction). As well, for those that want to wall-mount the unit, the piece comes at an additional charge of about $80 (so keep that in mind and in your budget if you are looking to save space). The other issues are that, there is no AC adapter to charge the unit while it is in use and that you have to depress the trigger the entire time you are using it as opposed to it having a lock mechanism. This tires the hand and can make cleaning strenuous, especially when you have to carry around the machine and guide it with the same hand while keeping the button pressed down.
IMHO
This is a basic tool, if a light weight handheld is what you are looking for, this is a good choice. If you don’t have a pet and are a ‘clean freak’ seeking the best handheld vac for basic tasks, this is your best bet. The performance will not disappoint. However, if you have a pet, lots of nooks and crannies that need attention and are interested in more attachments, pick up the DC34 instead (it works out to less money when you factor in the cost of purchasing the additional attachments). If it were me, I’d spend the extra money and get the DC34 because I do have pets at home.
I can understand that Dyson had to compete in the handheld market, but I think this is an expensive option that can be of use for a multiple-Dyson household. However for a person looking to make one purchase, I’d say go for a full-sized unit and get comfortable with the attachments and hose. If Dyson takes the feedback it keeps getting about the issues surrounding this machine, they’ll turn around the cons and make a better unit. I still think that for the price, a full-sized unit is a better choice.
If you need to add some new cleaning tools to your arsenal, then look no further then Maker’s Clean Products. They offer affordable cloths and cleaning products to get you on the right track to a cleaner and fresher home.

Apparently, extra batteries can be purchased directly from Dyson via telephone at 1-877-397-6622. Everyone gives them similar feedback about the charge times and on the website they state that ‘We are working at increasing the run time on our handhelds. Originally the handhelds had a 6 minute run time and now we are up to 15 minutes on the DC35 model. We are constantly looking for ways to improve all of our products…”
That’s good to know.

I recently bought DC30 and it has been really easy for me since then. It was only Dyson’s reputation that swung me. Well worth the money, this little beast boasts above-average suction for the size of the motor and has good battery life, relatively speaking. The battery life is more than ample to thoroughly clean every nook and cranny of the interior of my car and still have a little left to fetch up the crumbs on my kitchen side before it needs recharging – and recharging is fast (again, relatively speaking). As well as the innovative standard tool cum retractable brush tool there is a long wand so that you really can reach every nook and cranny. As I said, I purchased primarily to use this in my car as it is awkward to get a mains vacuum to it but I’ve used this everywhere from the kitchen to cobwebs to taking out a moth annoyingly orbiting the light fitting. It is very versatile and always there when you need a vacuum but the job doesn’t justify fetching the mains cleaner out of the cupboard.
The DC30 is discontinued now, but the DC34 is a good replacement and now sells for about the same price the DC30 did.
I think the DC44 is the overall best choice, since it can be used as either a stick vacuum for cleaning floors or as a handheld for blinds, furniture, and anything else above the ground. It’s not cheap, but it’s still very lightweight and is even more powerful with better battery life than the DC34.
My husband and I purchased the purple animal ball vacuum in 2011. Like you, we had a cat, but we also had a husky. I happened to vacuum with our previous, $20 Walmart special vacuum earlier that morning & my husband used the Dyson later that afternoon (it was his idea to get the Dyson so he got first try). I thought I had gotten all of the fur up from our carpet (a FULL canister total that was 2-3 days worth), but after my husband vacuumed, it was still a full canister PER FLOOR with the Dyson. Best $600 we spent, knowing that it did it’s job.
